General Description

The Department began to offer postgraduate education in 2013 affiliated with the Institute of Science.

Degrees Offered

Thesis Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering

Cycle

Second Cycle / EQF 7 (Master’s Degree)

Admission and Registration Requirements

For Thesis Master’s Degree: To apply for the programme, candidates must hold a bachelor’s diploma, and submit the copy of their ALES score (Academic Staff and Postgraduate Education Admission Exam) which must be at least 55 of quantitative weight (SAY). The exam is centrally held by ÖSYM (Centre for Assessment, Selection, and Placement).

Bachelor’s degree holders who are graduates of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, Astronautical Engineering, Naval Architecture, Mechatronics Engineering, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Energy Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, and other similar engineering departments, Department of Physics and Mathematics, graduates of the Faculty of Technical Education can apply for the Master’s Degree Programme.

Recognition of Prior Learning

In accordance with Article 10 of the Regulation on Beykent University’s Postgraduate Education and Training, students are admitted to the programmes at Institutes through horizontal transfer provided that they meet the requirements for horizontal transfer, which are determined by the Academic Board upon the Institute Administrative Board’s decision, and the Head of the Department’s opinion. Students submit a letter of application through which they request to be exempt from certain courses within the same postgraduate programme of Beykent University as the courses of their prior postgraduate programme at another university Their application including the course contents and transcripts will be evaluated upon the Institute Administrative Board’s decision, considering the opinion of the Head of the Department, and the Board will decide which courses the students took will be awarded credits for the courses they must take within the Programme they have recently enrolled. The courses students took at the university they attended may be recognised as the elective or compulsory courses with the Institute Administrative Board’s approval.

If the prior learning is recognised, credits and letter grades of the courses the students passed successfully at their prior higher education institution are transferred in accordance with Article 19 of the Regulation on Beykent University’s Postgraduate Education and Training. Courses are transferred to the students’ transcripts, which state the equivalents in the course plan of the Programme they are enrolled, and include the original name, code, credit of the courses, as well as the grades received from the courses. Thus, the students will be exempt from the courses on condition that the total credits of the courses taken transferred cannot constitute 70% of the total courses required in the programme.

Competence Requirements and Rules

Thesis Programme: 3 years, 2 terms in each year, 15 weeks in each term, 120 ECTS in total.

Programme Description

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is a comprehensive discipline of Engineering which involves such processes as analysing, design, manufacturing, operating, maintaining, and repairing all kinds of mechanical and energy conversion systems. Mechanical Engineers have also competence in fundamental subjects of engineering such as Mechanics, Kinematics, Thermodynamics, and Energy as well as the basic principles of Mathematics and Physics; and they can utilise the information efficiently to design, manufacture, and analyse mechanical and energy conversion systems. Within the scope of the Master’s Degree Programme in Mechanical Engineering, we offer to our students an opportunity for education through which they can specialise in a major they would like after their undergraduate education. We also offer the courses in Design, Composite Materials, Advanced Gas Dynamics, Fracture Mechanics, Heat Transfer, Thermodynamics, Energy, Damage Analysis, Nanotechnology, Non-Destructive Testing, and Automotive, which enables our students to be equipped with advanced and detailed knowledge. The academic staff consists of seven members who have experience in both national and international institutions.

Learning Outcomes

Students:

  1. Improve their knowledge of Engineering regarding manufacturing and analysis.
  2. Improve their skills in conducting experimental studies.
  3. Improve their skills in designing mechanical systems, and making static and dynamic analyses of isotropic materials.
  4. Improve their skills in working in interdisciplinary teams.
  5. Improve their skills in defining, formulating, and solving the mechanical problems in Mechanical Engineering.
  6. Heighten their sense of professional and ethical responsibility.
  7. Improve their skills of effective communication.
  8. Develop their competence in understanding the universal and social aspects of the solutions in Mechanical Engineering.
  9. Are more aware of the necessity of lifelong learning.
  10. Have knowledge of the problems of the time.
  11. Improve their skills to use the techniques, capacities and modern tools for Mechanical Engineering practices.
  12. Improve their skills in access information.
  13. Improve their skills in undertaking initiative.

Career Opportunities

The Programme enables students to acquire more detailed information about different fields of Mechanical Engineering. Thus, they will have a career opportunity in all fields of the service sector involved in Manufacturing, Automotive, Design, Heat, Energy, Materials, and Nanomaterials.

Many of our graduates will have the opportunity to work in the public or private sector relevant to their major, and make contributions to the increase in employment. They can work as researchers or project engineers in R&D companies or relevant departments of institutions. They can also work in high-technology companies, or defence, aeronautics, and automotive industries, all of which require a high level of knowledge. They can apply for a PhD Programme relevant to their major, and improve themselves scientifically and academically.
