Admission and Registration Requirements

For Thesis Master’s Degree: To apply for the programme, candidates must hold a bachelor’s diploma, and submit the copy of their ALES score (Academic Staff and Postgraduate Education Admission Exam) which must be at least 55 of quantitative weight (SAY). The exam is centrally held by ÖSYM (Centre for Assessment, Selection, and Placement). Graduates of the Department of Architecture, Interior Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Civil Engineering, and Naval Architecture can apply for the Master’s Degree Programme.

Recognition of Prior Learning

In accordance with Article 10 of the Regulation on Beykent University’s Postgraduate Education and Training, students are admitted to the programmes at Institutes through horizontal transfer provided that they meet the requirements for horizontal transfer, which are determined by the Academic Board upon the Institute Administrative Board’s decision, and the Head of the Department’s opinion. Students submit a letter of application through which they request to be exempt from certain courses within the same postgraduate programme of Beykent University as the courses of their prior postgraduate programme at another university Their application including the course contents and transcripts will be evaluated upon the Institute Administrative Board’s decision, considering the opinion of the Head of the Department, and the Board will decide which courses the students took will be awarded credits for the courses they must take within the Programme they have recently enrolled. The courses students took at the university they attended may be recognised as the elective or compulsory courses with the Institute Administrative Board’s approval.

If the prior learning is recognised, credits and letter grades of the courses the students passed successfully at their prior higher education institution are transferred in accordance with Article 19 of the Regulation on Beykent University’s Postgraduate Education and Training. Courses are transferred to the students’ transcripts, which state the equivalents in the course plan of the Programme they are enrolled, and include the original name, code, credit of the courses, as well as the grades received from the courses. Thus, the students will be exempt from the courses on condition that the total credits of the courses taken transferred cannot constitute 70% of the total courses required in the programme.

Competence Requirements and Rules

Thesis Programme: 3 years, 2 terms in each year, 15 weeks in each term, 120 ECTS in total.

Programme Description

The vision of Beykent University’s Institute of Sciences, Department of Architecture, Thesis Master’s Degree Programme in Architecture is to research and analyse the interdisciplinary relations between Architecture, Design, and Urban Design. Within this framework, the Programme aims to enable students to improve their knowledge and competences acquired through their undergraduate education in Design according to their interests and skills; establish connection between theory and professional practices in Architecture to put theoretical knowledge into practical knowledge. In addition, the Programme also enables students to analyse different perspectives with respect to Architectural Design, Architectural Theory and Criticism, Environment and City, and carry out remarkable studies using various approaches, methods, and techniques relevant to Architecture. The Programme enables research on the subjects arisen by the coincidence of Architecture and the fields Modern Science and Philosophy, natural and artificial environments, evolution theories, collaboration of Architecture and Genetics, problems due to the relationship between people and place, protection of regional/local values and ecological balance, healthy use of energy resources, and the theories and concepts of sustainable plan and project designing.

Learning Outcomes

Students:

  • Interpret research on subjects regarding the Architecture, define problems, and come up with solutions to those problems; plan a project, draw up, present, and support a research and project report.
  • Access the current written and visual resources for the master planning and architectural projects, have effective communication skills verbally and in writing, abide by the ethics, discipline, and culture of individual or group research.
  • Analyse the interaction between the natural and social environments, and come up with solutions to the matter.
  • Acquire the skills of carrying out research, making analyses, and interpretations with the help of other disciplines.
  • Carry out scientific research individually regarding the subjects in Architecture.
  • Produce distinctive academic works by using the right norms and standards on their research and publications.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the Master’s Degree Programme in Architecture will have many opportunities to work in various sectors. They will have different options such as pursuing a PhD Programme and start an academic career, working in public institutions, or as a freelance architect, as a project architect in an architecture office, as a worksite architect in a worksite, in a building control company, or a consultancy firm.

For the Non-Thesis Master’s Degree: To apply for the programme, candidates must hold a bachelor’s diploma. The ALES is not required for the non-thesis master’s degree programme.  Graduates of the Department of Architecture, Interior Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Civil Engineering, Naval Architecture, Industrial Product Design, graduates of the Faculty of Art and Design, the Department of Performing Arts Design of the Faculty of Fine Arts, Arts Management, Painting and Drawing, Graphic Design, Traditional Turkish Arts, Furniture and Decoration Teaching of the Faculty of Technical Education, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Geological and Geophysics Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and Geomatics Engineering can apply for the Master’s Degree Programme.

Programme Description

The vision of Beykent University’s Institute of Sciences, Department of Architecture, Non-Thesis Master’s Degree Programme in Architectural Design is to enable our students to gain proficiency in Architectural Design. Within this scope, the Programme aims to enable students improve their knowledge and skills which they acquired during their undergraduate education, according to their competences and interests, focus on the problematics as a whole in regard to the profession of Architecture and the environment, put theoretical knowledge they acquired into professional practice, and increase their awareness regarding their roles in the profession of Architecture. Besides, it aims to equip the students with the knowledge enabling them to gain, perspectives and produce remarkable solutions regarding the Architectural Design, Environment and City, and present and put forward the solutions in an appropriate context. The Programme also enables the students to research the modern approaches to the Architectural Design, Architectural and Urban Transformation, the role of environmental and climatic factors, geometric and structural systems, sustainable and accessible design principles, and green architectural strategies.
