General Description

Foundation

The Department began to offer postgraduate education with its Master’s Degree Programme in Turkish Language and Literature in the Academic Year 2015-2016 affiliated to the Institute of Graduate Program. The Programme aims to educate students who have full knowledge of the History of Language and Literature of Turkish, acquired the skills of reading, analysing, and construing texts from different centuries, have full knowledge of the literature in their field, and follow new theories and methods to improve themselves and contribute to their academic career development. The Programme is in Turkish.

Admission and Registration Requirements

To apply for the Thesis Master’s Degree Programme, candidates must hold a bachelor’s diploma, and submit their copy of the ALES (Academic Staff and Postgraduate Education Admission Exam) score, which must be at least 55 of the required weight (verbal or quantitative or equally weighted) by the Programme. The exam is centrally held by ÖSYM (Centre for Assessment, Selection, and Placement).

Recognition of Prior Learning

In accordance with Article 10 of the Regulation on Beykent University’s Postgraduate Education and Training, students are admitted to the programmes at Institutes through horizontal transfer provided that they meet the requirements for horizontal transfer, which are determined by the Academic Board upon the Institute Administrative Board’s decision, and the Head of the Department’s opinion. Students submit a letter of application by means of which they request to be exempt from certain courses within the same postgraduate programme of Beykent University as the courses of the postgraduate programme of another university they had enrolled in before. Their application including the course contents and transcripts will be the Head of the Department, and the Board will decide which courses the students took will be awarded credits for the courses they must take within the Programme they have recently enrolled. The courses students took at the university they attended may be recognised as the elective or compulsory courses with the Institute Administrative Board’s approval.

Competence Requirements and Rules

3 years, 2 terms in each year, 15 weeks in each term, 120 ECTS in total.

Learning Outcomes:

To have the theoretical knowledge of Turkish Language. To know the required knowledge of the historical development of the language;

To identify the Turkish Literature within its historical development. To acquire the necessary information about different periods;

To know knowledge of the theories of literature, and the methods of criticism;

To have more advanced knowledge about the Old Turkish period, to get detailed information about historical dialects such as Göktürk Turkish, Old Uyghur Turkish and their features, to be able to analyze texts;

To have more comprehensive information about Ottoman Turkish and to gain the ability to interpret Ottoman texts;

To recognize the theories in the field of text analysis and criticism and to gain the ability to analyze a text according to these methods and theories;

To gain the ability to do scientific researches about the words by having the necessary information about Turkish lexicology and to have knowledge in Turkish lexicography;

It aims to have the required skills to carry out scientific studies regarding Contemporary Turkish Literature.

Programme Description

There are 6 faculty members and 2 research assistants from different disciplines in Beykent University Graduate Education Institute, Turkish Language and Literature Department, Turkish Language and Literature Master Program. There is a library in Taksim campus where the institute is located.

Career Opportunities

The graduates can work in libraries, press and broadcasting institutions (television, newspaper, magazine, as an editör in publisher houses etc.), in higher education institutions (lecturer) and they can work as teachers at secondary schools or colleges; can work in educational institutions abroad. It also provides the opportunity to transition to the doctoral program for those planning an academic career.
