Department of Cinema and Television (MA)

General Description

Thesis Master’s Degree Programme in Cinema and Television of the Institute of Graduate Studies involves first of all the Cinema, and then the fields of Television, Communication, and Media. The Programme consists of a thesis study, which focuses on producing a short film (or a documentary or an experimental film). The Programme also equips students with the theoretical knowledge regarding the importance of the fields Cinema and Television in terms of arts and society, their development, and application of new techniques and practices, as well as it encourages the students to carry out research, and thus apply for a doctoral degree programme in Fine Arts.

The Department began to offer postgraduate education in 2008 affiliated with the Institute of Social Sciences.

Admission and Registration Requirements

To apply for the Thesis Master’s Degree Programme, candidates must hold a bachelor’s diploma. The ALES is not required for the admission to the conservatoire and master’s degree programmes in Fine Arts.  

Recognition of Prior Learning

In accordance with Article 10 of the Regulation on Beykent University’s Postgraduate Education and Training, students are admitted to the programmes at Institutes through horizontal transfer provided that they meet the requirements for horizontal transfer, which are determined by the Academic Board upon the Institute Administrative Board’s decision, and the Head of the Department’s opinion. Students submit a letter of application through which they request to be exempt from certain courses within the same postgraduate programme of Beykent University as the courses of their prior postgraduate programme at another university Their application including the course contents and transcripts will be evaluated upon the Institute Administrative Board’s decision, considering the opinion of the Head of the Department, and the Board will decide which courses the students took will be awarded credits for the courses they must take within the Programme they have recently enrolled. The courses students took at the university they attended may be recognised as the elective or compulsory courses with the Institute Administrative Board’s approval.

Competence Requirements and Rules

Thesis Programme: 3 years, 2 terms in each year, 15 weeks in each term, 120 ECTS in total.

Students must complete the theoretical and applied courses, and the Master’s Degree seminar successfully, and their thesis defence must be found eligible.

Programme Description

Students take courses on theories of cinema, aesthetics in cinema, and film criticism. In order to enable students to gain proficiency through the courses taught, the Programme offers courses on music and musical, narrative techniques, making meaning, the connection between Cinema and History.

Learning Outcomes

Graduates of the Programme can apply for a Doctor of Fine Arts or a PhD programme.

Students:

  • Improve their skills of practising the knowledge of Art of Filmmaking creatively.
  • Improve themselves in terms of creativity, research and practice, and they will be able to produce solutions.
  • Have knowledge of global and social effects of Art of Filmmaking.
  • Have a good command in technical tools and devices, and computer programmes.
  • Learn to prepare for a film to the processes of pre-production and post-production.
  • Check the process of scriptwriting, and learn how to write a script.
  • Gain the ability to work in a team.
  • Gain the ability to take initiative, and improve their verbal and written communication skills.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the Master’s Degree Programme in Cinema and Television can work as creative directors or line producers in various branches of the Cinema, Television, and Communication sector. They can work as directors, scriptwriters- or they can write scripts for a series-, assistant directors, directors of photography, film editors, and art directors. 

Opportunities offered by the Department

Within the Department of Cinema and Television, the courses are taught by both full-time academicians and part-time professionals who are specialised in their fields. Fully-equipped classrooms and a TV Studio is available for our students. Camera, and lighting and sound equipment are put at students’ disposal during applied courses. Students are encouraged to send their films shot within their thesis studies to national and international festivals.
