Management Information Systems (Distance Learning)

The Department of Business Administration of Beykent University’s Institute of Graduate Studies offers a Non-thesis Master’s Degree Programme in Management Information Systems (Distance Learning) in accordance with the Council of Higher Education’s (YÖK) approval dated 05.07.2008. The Programme provides a modern and effective education that covers programming languages, computer and network technologies, databases, standardisation, and management of e-commerce and software projects. Furthermore, the Programme aims to educate professionals who come up with technological solutions to problems.  The Programme offers Turkish-medium instruction.

The ALES (Academic Staff and Postgraduate Education Admission Exam) is not required for non-thesis master’s degree programmes. (The Amendment Published in the Official Gazette No.  30417 of 10.05.2018) To apply for the master’s degree programme, candidates must have a bachelor’s diploma, and provide a copy of ALES (Academic Staff and Postgraduate Education Admission Exam which is administrated centrally by the Centre for Assessment, Selection and Placement) score which must be at least 55 points in the required score type (verbal, quantitative or equal weight) or provide a copy of an equivalent score of Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT), which are internationally recognized by the Council of Higher Education. The Senate will decide how much the ALES scores are taken into consideration during the admission and evaluation processes (The determined percentage will be a minimum of 50%.). However, the Institute may admit students to a master’s degree programme solely based on their ALES scores. The minimum score obtained in an ALES equivalent exam which is recognised by the Council of Higher Education may be increased upon the Senate’s decision.

Recognition of Prior Learning
In accordance with Article 10 of Beykent University’s Regulation on Graduate Education and Training, students are admitted to the programmes at the Institute through change of major upon Institute Administrative Board’s decision, and Head of the Department’s approval if they meet the requirements for change of major which are set out by the Institute Academic Board. Students submit a letter of application through which they request to be exempt from some courses of Beykent University’s graduate programmes which they had taken and passed at their previous university’s graduate programme. Their application concerning course contents and transcripts will be evaluated upon Institute Administrative Board’s decision, and considering the opinion of Head of the Department. Those courses students have taken at the receiving university they attended as part of an exchange programme may be recognised as elective or compulsory courses with the approval of the Institute Administrative Board.

Non-Thesis: 1 and a half years (maximum 3 terms), 2 terms in 1 year, 15 weeks in 1 term, 90 ECTS in total. Being successful in 10 courses and the term project.

Management Information Systems is a field of study which uses information that professionals from different levels need in any sector combined with behavioural and technical sciences. The field allows professionals to turn data into comprehensible, interpretable and usable information, choose the right alternatives and thus make the right decisions, and carry out necessary activities. The Programme also teaches students how to apply relevant methods to minimise the risk of errors and make the best decisions with the help of the most up-to-date resources during decision-making processes. The Programme aims to educate individuals with management and decision-making skills.

Programme Outcomes

Students:

  1. Acquire knowledge of Information Technologies, Management, Organisation and Operations Research to solve problems by using MIS tools.
  2. Analyse data using management information techniques.
  3. Obtain and compile the data necessary for solving problems of different disciplines for data analysis.
  4. Use strategies of software programmes used in MIS to solve problems.
  5. Participate in scientific projects as an MIS specialist and take part in the development and management of these projects.
  6. Take responsibility in teamwork to solve a problem using an MIS, and contribute to the team.
  7. Interpret the national and international criteria (ISO, EN, TSE) developed to increase product quality, and contribute to the quality improvement processes.
  8. Describe the information necessary for MIS verbally and in writing, and prepare reports indicating the methods that offer solutions to problems.
  9. Follow the scientific and common ethical rules during the process of planning, data collection, turning data into information, and suggestion-making to solve MIS-related problems.
  10. Handle social problems within the project circle.

Career Opportunities
Our graduates can work as managers in departments such as planning and reporting in the public sector; as IT managers and programmers in the private sector; as project managers, systems analysts/designers, IT specialists, and sales and marketing specialists/managers in companies providing information technology solutions. In addition, they can work as academicians in relevant departments of universities.

Upward Transfer
In accordance with the Council of Higher Education’s Regulation on Graduate Education and Training dated 20.04.2016, students who have graduated from a non-thesis programme cannot pursue a doctoral degree.
